SkillEd is a mobile app built to make life easier for teachers. It offers fun, interactive tools, easy-to-access online courses, and virtual events where teachers can connect and learn from one another. The goal is to support teachers, make learning more exciting, and create an inclusive space where everyone grows both in and out of the classroom.

PROBLEM
In many African countries, especially Nigeria, the quality of education has dropped in recent years. One major reason is the gap in teacher training and professional development. Many teachers don’t have access to the right tools, resources, or community to grow and improve. This leads to inconsistent teaching standards and makes it harder for students to get a quality education. Without better support, teachers are left feeling overwhelmed and under-equipped to make a real impact.
SOLUTION
SkillEd provides teachers with easy access to interactive courses, teaching tools, and a community of fellow educators, all in one mobile app. It bridges the training gap by offering continuous learning and professional growth opportunities, helping teachers stay inspired, confident, and connected. With SkillEd, teachers can teach better, grow faster, and deliver quality education no matter where they are.
RESEARCH INSIGHTS
From the user research conducted, we discovered some of the challenges teachers faced:
Many teachers feel stuck using outdated teaching methods.
There’s a strong desire for professional growth, but limited access to the right tools and training.
Time constraints and lack of support make it hard for teachers to upskill.
Teachers want a sense of community to connect, share ideas, and learn from one another.
Digital solutions are welcomed, but only if they’re easy to use and truly helpful in their day-to-day work.
INSIGHTS TO IMPACT
Based on what we learned from teachers, we designed SkillEd to directly address their challenges and goals. Here’s how:
Access to extra resources after completing each course, so learning doesn’t stop when the lesson ends.
Professional development courses, including soft skills training, to help teachers stay current and meet diverse student needs.
Networking events, organized regularly and open to all users, so teachers can connect, share, and grow together.
A leaderboard feature to spark motivation and make learning more engaging and rewarding.
Anytime, anywhere access to learning materials (mobile first), so teachers can learn at their own pace, on their own terms.
OUTCOMES
As SkillEd scales, we will continue to focus on creating meaningful change in teacher development across Africa. Our projected aim for the next 12 months is to:
Empower over 10,000 teachers with easy access to professional development courses, soft skills training, and valuable teaching resources.
Expand into undeserved regions, ensuring that at least 40% of new users come from rural and underrepresented communities.
Strengthen community and engagement through 30+ networking events and a gamified leaderboard that keeps 75% of users actively involved.
LESSSONS LEARNED
This project taught us the importance of digging deeper to find the real problem.
Initially, we set out to build a platform for students but through research, we discovered that improving education starts with empowering teachers. We realized that the main challenge wasn’t teachers’ ability to teach, but the lack of resources and support they had access to. This shift in perspective helped us design a solution that addresses the root of the problem, not just the symptoms.
SUMMARY
What started as a student-focused idea became a powerful solution for teachers. By listening to real educators and understanding their struggles, we uncovered a deeper problem: the lack of support and resources for those shaping the future. SkillEd was designed to bridge that gap, offering access to growth, community, and motivation. With SkillEd, we’re not just improving how teachers teach, we’re helping reshape the future of education, one empowered teacher at a time.
